Lightning Engine - Devlog #5: Lights

  • 2026-10-07

Short version: Lightning Engine now supports Directional Light, Ambient Light, Spotlight and Point light. The Entity view looks a bit better now.

Lights

4 light types are added to Lightning Engine:

  • Ambient Light - a type of light that illuminates every surface equally
  • Directional Light - represents an infinite far light source, like the Sun or Moon
  • Point Light - emits light in all directions equally from a single source, like a light blub
  • Spotlight - emits a cone of light from a single source toward a given direction, like a flashlight

The common attributes (color, intensity, light set) of light can be already set from the editor.

However setting individual attributes like umbra and penumbra in case of spotlights still in progress.

Here is a small night scene I made using the new light system:

(I know that spotlights are a bit off, but setting them properly is was not possible in this build.)

Entity view

I've separated the Entities list from Scenes list, since working on several scenes once is not a valid use-case of a game engine. The scenes list might be completely gone in future releases, since switching between scenes is rarely needed and the scenes list just occupies worthy space, where the user of the engine could see more entities once, or something usefull.
I've also added different icon before different entity types. Game objects got a "cube" icon, and lights got different "light" icons. This makes them faster to distinguish.

It looks like this:
